What is pre-ballet?

Pre-ballet – also known as early dance education – is the ideal first encounter with music, rhythm and movement for young children. It's not about practising ballet technique, but about getting to know the body in a playful way and developing a sense of music and space.

In our pre-ballet classes in Düsseldorf-Unterbilk, children dive into a world full of stories, images and sounds. A lesson might, for example, be built around a theme: today we are butterflies, tomorrow we dance in a snowstorm. Through these images, children learn without realising it what lightness, energy and expression in movement mean.

Which age group is pre-ballet for?

Our pre-ballet classes are aimed at children aged 3 to 5 years. At this stage of development, the brain is especially receptive to rhythmic and motor impulses – music and movement leave a deep impression.

No prior experience is needed. Children who have never danced before are just as welcome as children who have already had a few first experiences.

What happens in a typical pre-ballet class?

A lesson usually lasts 45 minutes – perfectly matched to the attention span of young children. No two classes are exactly alike, but the following elements recur regularly:

How does pre-ballet prepare children for later ballet lessons?

Pre-ballet lays the foundations on which all later ballet lessons build. Children who move on to children's ballet well prepared find it much easier – because they have already learned to listen to music, to give their bodies instructions and to work within a group.

Our curriculum follows the principles of the Vaganova method – the Russian classical ballet system that is also used in the highest levels of ballet training worldwide. For young children this means: structured exercises that build on one another and never overtax the body.

The typical progression at our school looks like this: Pre-ballet (ages 3–5) → Children's ballet (ages 5–7) → Advanced children's ballet (age 8+) → Pointe training
